Read this one with the card open. Something on it is illegible, missing or ambiguous. It is transcribed exactly as written — nothing has been guessed or filled in — and every uncertainty is marked below.

(title capitalised as written)

Crust

(the card braces these three together against the crust instruction) - ½ c. butter - 1½ c. flour - ¼ c. sugar

Pat crust in 8" pan. Bake 350° 15 to 20 min.

Filling

  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ c. sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • ¼ tsp baking powder
  • 3 tb. lemon juice
  • ⚠ "t" — a lone letter ends the ingredient list with nothing after it. See Notes.

Mix together the filling. Pour over parcially baked crust. (spelled as written) Return to oven for 18–20 minutes and sprinkle with confectoners sugar (as written) & cut in bars.

Notes

⚠ The ingredient list ends in an orphan "t". The last line of the column is a single letter with no quantity and no ingredient. It is the second orphan of this kind in the box — hot-dog-relish has a bare "1 tblsp" with no ingredient — and both look like a pencil that stopped mid-line.

What it probably was is not written down here. Lemon rind or zest is the conventional companion to lemon juice in a bar like this, and "t" would fit "1 t. lemon rind" — but the quantity is missing too, so this is a guess twice over and it stays a question. publish: needs-review.

Unlike its neighbour lemon-glacers, this card does carry a temperature, both times and the pan size, so it is makeable as written; only the last ingredient is lost.

These two cards are closely related — same pencil, same heavy print, same shortbread base, same lemon theme, consecutive in the scan order. They were probably written at the same sitting, and whatever "t" is may well appear in full on a sibling card further into the box. Worth re-checking when the batch is done.
