Read this one with the card open. Something on it is illegible, missing or ambiguous. It is transcribed exactly as written — nothing has been guessed or filled in — and every uncertainty is marked below.
Summary
The cooked glaze for a strawberry pie — sugar, water and cornstarch thickened and tinted with strawberry jelly. Look here for the glaze proportions; the card does not cover the strawberries or the crust, so it is half a pie recipe rather than a whole one.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 2 T. corn starch (spelled "corn startch" on the card)
- pinch salt
- 3 T strawberry jelly
Method
Cook sugar, water, cornstarch and salt until clear. Add jelly and a few drops of red food colouring. Let cool a few minutes.
Notes on the artifact
A lined index card in an upright printed hand, blue ballpoint, headed "ingredants:" (as written) on the
front and "prep and cooking instructions" on the back. The same hand and the same card stock as
banana-bread from this batch — the two are evidently from one writer's set. One word in the method is
struck through and illegible.
