The book has this recipe more than once. Also here as Apple Crisp in Recipe Box. Same dish, different piece of paper — kept separately on purpose, because each copy came into the house its own way.

Read this one with the card open. Something on it is illegible, missing or ambiguous. It is transcribed exactly as written — nothing has been guessed or filled in — and every uncertainty is marked below.

Summary

A stovetop-apples, oat-free crumb-top apple crisp, worth pulling up when you want a fast baked-apple dessert without needing a specific pan size or bake time already in hand.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups apples
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar (card reads oddly — closer to "1/6 cup sugar" — transcribed as written, not silently corrected; see open question)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup butter

Method

  1. Cut apples.
  2. Pour water and lemon juice over apples.
  3. Mix cinnamon and white sugar; pour over apples and stir in.
  4. Mix brown sugar and butter; cut in flour and salt to make crumbs.
  5. Bake at 350°F till apples are soft. ⚠ Time not stated on the card.

Notes on the artifact

Handwritten on a blank Hallmark "Recipe For ___" fill-in card (Hallmark Cards, Inc.), filled in by hand in blue and black ink/pencil. "Time required," "Serves," and the "From" attribution line on the back are all left blank; "Can be made ahead" and "Can be frozen" checkboxes are both unchecked. Undated and unsigned — no author name or date appears anywhere on the card.
